BIRCH PLYWOOD
NATURAL BEAUTY, REFINED — PLYWOOD BRINGS WARMTH, GRAIN, AND CHARACTER TO EVERY PIECE.
We LOVE plywood!
At Shapes in Space birch plywood sits at the heart of our work. We love its light tone, its clean surface, and the iconic striped edge that makes every piece instantly recognisable. It carries a Scandinavian simplicity that feels fresh yet timeless, and it has long been admired by designers and architects for exactly that reason. The Bauhaus movement celebrated it as a material that was honest, functional, and beautiful in its own right. We carry that same belief forward in the way we design today.

Strength & Stability
Birch plywood is built from many thin layers of veneer, cross laminated for balance and strength. This structure makes it remarkably dimensionally stable, resisting the twisting and warping that solid wood can sometimes show. For us that means shelves remain flat, doors stay aligned, and joints remain true. It also has excellent acoustic qualities, which makes it especially well suited to furniture for audio systems. The even density and stiffness help reduce unwanted vibration, creating a stable base for turntables, speakers, and vinyl storage.
Oak,
Thoughtfully Used
When a project calls for the timeless warmth of oak, we use oak veneer over birch plywood. Oak is a slow growing hardwood and using veneer allows us to capture its beauty while using far less of this precious resource. The birch core provides strength and dimensional reliability while the oak surface offers natural texture and a graceful grain. This approach is more sustainable than working in solid oak and it ensures that the furniture not only looks beautiful but also lasts for generations without the risk of seasonal movement.

Look and Feel
The combination of birch plywood and oak veneer gives us a palette that feels purposeful, tactile, and deeply connected to design heritage. Edges can be left exposed to show the striped profile or softened and veneered for a quieter effect. The clean geometry of our pieces reflects Bauhaus principles while staying rooted in contemporary living. These materials allow us to balance function with character, creating furniture that is as considered in its sustainability as it is in its appearance and feel
